I've been culturing Grindal worms in opaque plastic containers on different mediums with great success.
Grindal worms do not really need much of daylight for culturing.
I want to try Grindal worms in clear glass containers - to see if it makes any difference.
Here you can see one of my, about a year old well established Grindal worms culture.
I am going to use tree bark as the medium for this culture.
Put enough tree bark to cover the bottom of the glass jar.
Moist the tree bark.
Now let's take some tree bark with Grindal worms on it from the old culture.
Basically, I am splitting the old culture on two cultures.
It is the easiest way to start a new culture.
That's all it takes for seeding the new culture :)
Also, we can make it much prettier by adding some live moss to it.
I have nice looking land mosses growing on a land platform in my aquarium all year around.
That's another interesting project ;)
Let's add this moss to the new jar terrarium.
Let's give some food for Grindal worms to chew on.
My Grindal worms enjoy feeding on cheerios among other plant based food.
Try not to overfeed and keep the food away from the moss.
I keep my Grindal worms and Springtails cultures on the shelf next to my aquariums.
About one months later.
The colony of Grindal worms get mixed with a white springtails.
They all coexist peacefully and my fish enjoy eating all of them.
This time I give them a pinch of active dried yeast to feed on.
All looks good.
Occasionally, mold starts growing on crumbles of food stuck on tips of moss.
I use soft brush to swipe away the mold and remove any uneaten food.
Grindal worms, and Springtails for that matter, do not feed on mold.
Check my videos about it for more details.
Grindal worms enjoy the moist environment.
I did not see any difference culturing Grindal worms in clear glass jars vs opaque containers.
Everything looks the same except one.
The clear jar terrarium looks admittedly nicer :)
My fish enjoy eating Grindal worms all the same no matter where they came from :))
Though, opaque plastic food containers are much easier to get by for me.
Have fun and happy Grindal worms :)
