I feed my adult Eastern newts with small sized isopods.
Eastern Newts can eat only what fits in their mouth in one take.
I keep a colony of isopods on the land platform in the aquarium with my 3 newts.
This terrestrial isopods enjoy high humidity environment of the aquarium.
Isopods breed monthly feeding on tree bark and scraps of vegetables from my kitchen.
Occasionally, some of the isopods may fall in the water where fish and newts can eat them.
Here you can see a newt near water surface waits to grab any isopod that may fall in the water.
Each of my newts eats 1 or 2 isopods every other day or so.
It takes a large colony of isopods to support appetites of 3 hungry newts :)
And of cause I have other live food available for feeding my newts.
Here you can see springtails I use for keeping the land part clean and to feed my fish.
You never know for sure if a newt is hungry enough - many times the food gets wasted.
It is a plenty of time for hungry newts to find them.
Though again, there are days when newts simply ignore any food.
Also, I culture isopods in disposable 16oz food containers.
A couple dozen containers stocks nicely on one standard Ikea shelf under my aquariums.
Check my videos about farming isopods for more details.
Isopods are one of the simplest critters to maintain for feeding newts all year around.
Watching newts during feeding time is fun.
Newts often miss while trying to hit targets.
Isopods often manage to escape from newts even after being caught.
Newt learn to wait for food at the spots where I feed them on feeding days.
My newts seem to be more interested in eating isopods than worms.
Here you can see a worm left in the aquarium from the previous feeding.
Have fun and happy newts :)
