Duckweed fish food

The pond in Central park of Manhattan is covered with duckweed in the middle of Summer.

Look at the ducks who enjoy it so much! No wonder we call it duckweed.

Duckweed is the home for swarms of little creatures.

And it's food for the fish and others who likes veggies! I feed the duckweed to my fish. The fish like it fresh with all these creatures caught in it.

Duckweed may stay in the fish tank for months - until the middle of Autumn. My fish want to eat it all year around! I sun dry or bake duckweed for this purpose.

Preheat oven at 250F.

I use a regular baking sheet.

Cover the baking sheet with aluminum foil.

Spread duckweed on the baking sheet, making an even layer.

Here I found water snails - good addition to my fish tank. Remove sticks and any trash trapped in the duckweed.

Place the duckweed in the oven. The baking time depends on the amount of water trapped with in the duckweed.

I check and stir the duckweed every 20-30 minutes.

The duckweed shrinks as it dries. 

And it becomes crunchy. I grind the dry duckweed between my fingers.

Remove the dry duckweed from the baking sheet before it changes color from green to brown. I store the dried or baked duckweed in airtight cans (empty fish food or baking soda cans).

Feed duckweed to your fish all year around!
