Growing Pothos Underwater

May 4th, 2017
A friend gives me a cutting of a Pothos plant.

I trimmed it further, making 2 cuttings with 2 leaves each.

 Put them in cups filled with dechlorinated water.

May 11th, 2017
A root grows in the first week.

May 14th, 2017
 The root grows longer.

 Notice that the root grows from a bud.
The other cutting remains rootless.

 I trim the stem of the rootless cutting to lower the buds underwater.

 The cutting with a root goes to a new nursery.

 June 5th, 2017
 In the past 3 weeks, new leaves grow on both plants.

 And roots grow strong on both plants.

Pothos grows very fast.
I added newborn guppies to one nursery.

I submerged most leaves of this plant.
Here a new root and a new leaf are growing underwater.
Only 1 leaf is above the water.

August 11th, 2017
 More leaves grow on the Pothos kept above water.

The plant with 1 leaf above water grows slower.

 I want to check if this Pothos can grow submerged fully underwater.

 Cut the plant in two parts.

Each part has roots.

The cutting with 5 leaves goes back to the same nursery.
This time, the whole plant is fully submerged underwater.

The plant I keep above the water grows very fast.

 I trim the newest leaf with a sprout.

Let's see if this cutting will grow roots.

Dip the cutting in water.

The leaf on the last cutting got some brownish discoloration.

And a new root started growing.

 The plant above water has healthy leaves and well developed roots.

There are many secondary roots.

 One leaf of the plant that grows underwater has a hole.

 Otherwise the plant looks healthy.
Though, it did not grow noticeably.

 Here you can see a new root grows.

Here you can see a female guppy nibbles on algae that has grown on the leaves of pothos.

I cultivate algae in all my aquariums.

Here you can see an underwater (fast growing) land moss.
The Pothos on the other hand grows very slow underwater.

 I cut off a wilted leaf from the plant that grows above water.

 The underwater plant is unchanged.

I cut off another wilted leaf from the plant that grows above water.

I made a cutting with 2 leaves and a sprout of a new leaf.

The new cutting goes on top of my HD aquarium to grow roots.

 A new leaf grows on the underwater Pothos!

The Pothos grows underwater at the same slow pace as Peace lily plants - without any maintenance.
