Buy Snails Locally on Craigslist:
My wild caught adult Eastern Newts feed only on live food.
Snails certainly make one of the best live food for newts that can grow right in the aquarium.
However, newts eat only certain types of snails.
And some newts, as this female newt named SheShy, could be a very picky about food.
As a matter of fact SheShy eats only snails and scuds.
This newt-a-girl ignores worms and isopods which are popular on menu for my male newts.
Newts are funny pets to watch.
And newts could be challenging pets to take care when it comes for feeding them.
I have well established populations of different snails in this aquarium.
The entire population of Bladder and Pond snails were wiped out by 3 newts in a matter of the first week.
Newts really love to eat Pond snails of about 5 millimeter size.
And this type of snails in aquariums typically grow up to 1 cm.
Bladder and Pond snails thrive in my other aquariums without newts.
Snails eggs laid above water line have better chances to survive in high humidity of aquarium with fish and newts constantly eating them.
Toothless newts eat only small size snails that they can swallow in a one whole piece.
And so, only large adult snails survive in the aquarium with newts.
Here you can see a lot of large adult Ramshorn snails.
Also, you can see here many even young Trumpet snails.
Newts do not eat Trumpet snails at all.
I think the hard and sharp pointed shell of Trumpet snails makes it painful for newts to eat them.
Eventually, the population of Trumpet snails gets to big and had to remove them manually.
Ramshorn snails also can lay eggs above the water line.
Ramshorn snails turns to be the most beneficial for keeping in the aquarium with newts.
Fish eat snail eggs.
And Newts eat small snails.
Some of the baby snails survive and grow big enough to be safe from being eaten by newts.
And the population of Ramshorn snails stays pretty stable.
Have fun and happy aquariums :)
