Here you can see my 29-gallon paludarium in March 2023.
There is a land platform with terrestrial mosses and land plants growing with roots in water.
Pothos is one of my favorite land plants that I've been growing with roots in water.
In previous years, I've been growing this Pothos on top of smaller aquariums, fully exposed to the atmospheric air.
This time the aquarium is fully enclosed to create a high-humidity environment with a temperature of 72-76F.
May 2023
The land platform is populated with isopods and springtails that serve as food for fish and newts in this tank.
Noticeably, springtails and isopods avoid feeding on mold.
The growing stem of the Pothos plant got damaged, and it's covered with mold as you can see here.
Yeah, finding any critters feeding on mold would be very useful for terrariums and households in general.
Well, let's remove the damaged parts of the plant.
Trim the damaged part of the stem.
I use a brush to remove the mold.
The rest of the tank looks healthy and clean.
I have other land plants growing with roots in water, serving as filters for the aquarium.
Blue Star Endlers fish, 3 Eastern newts, scuds, and snails in this self-feeding, sustainable tank.
All looks great as it should.
Three weeks later, by the end of May.
A new leaf and a new root sprouted forth.
The pothos proved again to be a very resilient plant.
Pothos is a very fast-growing plant indeed.
By the end of the month, I replaced the old land platform with a new modification for testing new ideas for self-feeding aquariums.
I hang the pothos plant on the walls of the tank using suction cups.
The roots of the plant stretched all the way to the bottom of the tank.
By September 2024, I completed all my land platforms projects.
The pothos plant has been growing in this high-humidity tank for one year with roots in water.
Let's remove some wilted leaves.
The pothos plant has been growing steadily through all seasons.
Fast-growing pothos serves as a filter for keeping water clean without changing the water in the aquarium.
Plants and algae do all the water cleaning in my aquariums.
November 2024
18 months of experimenting with growing a pothos plant in high humidity comes to an end.
Let's pull the pothos plant out for a closer look at it.
This pothos plant has grown the full length of the tank, over 3 feet long.
I used LED light on top of the aquarium lid for growing plants inside the tank.
The pothos grew over 30-inch-long roots from different spots of the stem.
The pothos proved again to be a very resilient, fast-growing plant with roots in water, benefiting aquariums greatly.
I will talk to you about other plants in future videos.
Have fun and happy aquariums :)
