Pothos in Aquarium

Pothos plants, also know as Money plant, have been growing in my aquariums for the past 7 years.

Buy Pothos locally on Craigslist:

or Buy Pothos plants on Amazon (paid link):

Beautiful long vines of the Pothos plant grow with their roots in water, virtually without any special care.

Pothos also can grow fully submerged underwater as you can see in my previous videos.

Here you can see some of my Pothos plants on September 3rd, 2021.

Pothos plants grow nice, strong roots in water making an aquarium look more attractive.

Let's trim off the long vines of this Pothos.
Keep a couple or more top leaves on the cutting.

Remove leaves from the bottom of the cutting to make the stem long enough to go underwater.
All leaves of the cutting stay above water.

I can put the cuttings in the same aquarium to grow.

Or let's grow Pothos cuttings in water without fish... in very low light conditions.
I use 1 liter plastic bottle to make a housing for one Pothos cutting.

Cut off the top part of the plastic bottle to make a planter.
Make the cut about 1 cm away from the curve of the bottleneck.

Use a sharp blade to make the cut.
So far all looks good...

Remove all labels from the bottle.
And remember to wash the bottle clean!

I use scissors to trim the edges of the cut nicely.

Flip the top part and put it inside of the bottle to check if it fits properly.
We have made the tank with the cover/ planter.

Put some gravel in the tank.

Add a seashell with a marble inside to make it look...hmm...prettier.

Put the planter on top and fill the tank with dechlorinated water to the level.
The water should stay below the bottlemouth of the planter.

Now let's add some aquatic plants.
In this example, I add cuttings of fast growing Guppy grass with whatever critters may come with it.

I see an adult snail on this cutting.
We don't really need snails or any other critters for this setup.

Let's add one more cutting of Guppy grass to make it all look prettier.

And finally, let's put a cutting of Pothos in the planter and place the planter on top of the aquarium.

No food or any fertilizers added.
The total water volume in this tank is about half of a liter.

The water level must always be below the bottom of the planter to allow for air circulation.

6 days later on September 9th I noticed a white root starts growing.

Here, take a closer look at the root.

I've been keeping this Pothos with a couple other plants in a shadowy part of my room.
All my aquarium gardens with fish I keep on the shelf next to the window, away from direct sunlight.

But this Pothos stays at the far wall from the window getting much less light.

September 26th.
It took about 3 weeks for the new root to grow all the way to the bottom.

December 4th, 2021
The 4 month old Pothos and the aquarium looks great.
I am going to move this Pothos to an even darker spot for the Winter.

Once every couple months, I add dechlorinated water to the level.

The Pothos seems to be doing fine in a very low light room.

May 4th, 2022

9 month old Pothos has been growing slowly into a pretty plant in a room with almost no light.
So far only one new leaf has grown... so, there is no need to trim the plant.

Pothos grows beautifully with its roots in water, under any lighting conditions without any maintenance all year around!

You can grow Pothos literally in a glass of water.
Have fun and Happy Pothos :)
