Swiftly moving around brightly colored Endlers fish look very pretty.
And in additional to the beautiful appearance Endlers also are very adaptive - specially when it comes to the feeding.
I keep and breed Endlers in sustainable self feeding aquariums.
Feeding is the most interesting and the most important part of aquarium care.
Feeding consist of 3 major parts.
Type of the food.
Amount of the food.
And Frequency of the feeding.
Regular observations help to understand needs and preferences of your fish.
Notice that Endlers nibble on everything in the aquarium all the time.
They can and will swallow anything that fits in the mouth.
Adult Endlers females consume much more food than pretty looking Endlers males do.
We can observe this common behavior most of the time.
Deposits of common green algae grown to sizable chunk attracts all kind of critters and fish.
Here you can see a big mama Endlers fish feed on algae.
Common green algae is available food in all aquariums.
Interestedly, even young baby Endlers nibble on plants growing in aquariums.
Endlers fish feed on plants.
I've been using excess of fast growing plants for making homemade fish food flakes.
Remove spare plants every other month or so and simply air dry them.
You can mix the plants with other ingredients, blend it all, air dry or bake it when in rush.
I personally prefer air dry - it takes about a week at normal room temperature.
This is the way of making sustainable aquariums.
I never run out of fish food.
It cost me nothing to make it.
And most importantly - fish love homemade food!
Check my videos about homemade fish food for more details.
Also, Endlers eat pretty much any fish food flakes from pet stores as well.
I give Endlers a small amount of fish flakes to eat it clean in about 3-5 minutes every other day.
Feeding small portions of food helps to avoid overfeeding.
Snails and other small critters feed on food waste keeping aquarium clean.
And fish feed on live food.
Endlers feed on snails eggs and such.
Endlers love to eat live food!
Speckle sized Seed Shrimp (ostracod) make perfect live food for newborn and small sized adult fish.
I add Seed Shrimp only one time when setting up new aquariums and "forget" about them.
Seed Shrimp are the simplest and versatile live food growing right in the aquarium.
I've been culturing Springtails for feeding my Endlers fish.
Springtails commonly used as a cleaning crew in terrariums.
Here you can see Endlers fish of all sizes picking tiny white Springtails right from the water surface.
Springtails serve as high protein snacks for my fish.
My Endlers enjoy eating Springtails about once a week.
I don't really measure quantity for each feeding - Springtails are too small for that.
I simply shake Springtails off from one culture per one feeding.
Grindal worms are one of the best live food my Endlers fish enjoy eating on regular basis.
Endlers can eat Grindal worms daily, weekly or as often as you can provide them.
I give small portions of Grindal worms that should take no more than 5 minutes for Endlers to eat clean - just like any other food.
Grindal worms are very simple to culture in apartments.
I actually culture Grindal worms in the same containers with Springtails.
3-4 feedings of different food a week seems to be the most optimal for my Endlers.
Scuds (gammarus) are the most prominent live food growing in my aquariums for Endlers to feed on anytime.
I add Scuds in my aquariums about once a month.
Adult scuds grow up to 1 cm long - it's too large for Endlers to swallow.
Endlers feed only on young and baby scuds that they can swallow easy.
Large adult scuds keep breeding right in the aquarium providing new food for Endlers to eat continuously.
Scuds feed on detritus, plants and... anything they could find in the aquarium.
All together it makes Scuds the most preferable food for Endlers in sustaining self-feeding aquariums.
Have fun and Happy Endlers fish :)
