Colombian Ramshorn Apple Snail in self sustaining aquarium

Colombian Ramshorn Apple Snail in self-sustaining aquarium

June 3rd 2022.
A friend gave me a Colombian Ramshorn Apple snail with a couple other Ramshorns.

I am going to put them all in one of my self-feeding self-sustaining aquariums.

Fish enjoy eating Springtails that I've been culturing on this land platform.

I don't change water and I don't use filters in this aquarium.
Please check my videos about it.

So, the Colombian Ramshorn Apple snail goes in this tank.
I keep all my aquariums covered to reduce water evaporation.

The Colombian Ramshorn snail enjoys feeding on deposits of common green algae just as Ramshorn snails do.

Here is a close up view.
This chunk of algae comes from the jar of aged water I use for refilling aquariums.

The Colombian Ramshorn snail uses the operculum to shield away from fish attacks.

The operculum is a very effective defense armor indeed!

The Colombian snail looks gorgeous as it moves magnificently around the tank.

It often visits the common spots where green algae usually grows.

August 30th.
It is the only time I have ever seen the Colombian Ramshorn snail climbed out of the water.

December 12th, 2022
I moved the Colombian Ramshorn snail in a much more spacious aquarium with newts.

This 29 gallon tank is also self-sustaining with large land platform for culturing live food.

More space offer much more fresh growing food for the snail to find.

The Colombian Ramshorn looks really great in the large tank!
I've been enjoying watching it moves around.

Here is a nice side view of the snail.

Regular Ramshorn snails look very small compare to the size of the Colombian snail.

My Colombian snail is not afraid of jumping of the cliff to take a short cut :)

The Colombian snail feeds on deposits of green algae and fresh growing aquatic plants.

It also picks any leftovers of homemade fish food flakes that I feed my fish - easy to find on this flat feeding spot.

It learns the feeding time just like all my fish - and it comes to the feeding spot on time for treats.

Occasionally, I see the Colombian snail lays down for a whole day or even longer in different spots.

The operculum is closed - no fish could disturb the snail.

The Colombian Ramshorn snail is too large to be eaten by my adult Eastern newts.
Eastern newts eat only small sized Ramshorn snails they can swallow in one take.

I truly enjoy keeping the Colombian Ramshorn snail.

The Colombian Ramshorn snail is a beautiful aquatic pet very suitable for self-sustaining aquariums.

Have fun and happy aquariums :)
