Biking Roosevelt Island

There is only one tram in New York City.

The tram takes visitors from 2nd avenue and East 59th street in Manhattan directly to Roosevelt Island.

At the tram station on the Roosevelt island we can take one way East Main Street to the East side,

two ways Main Street to the North,

or two ways West Main Street to the West side.

Let's go to the East side.
And before moving on...there is a public restroom at this tram station if you need to use one ;)

Down the hill, at the river in the front of us, is a ferry station.

East Main Street turns to South under the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge.

Here we get on East Loop Road with a view of Queens and Brooklyn.

This two way bike path goes around Cornell Tech’s campus.
Behind the hill, on my right, is the beautiful Manhattan skyline.
View of Queens and Brooklyn is on my left.

Right in front is the East entrance to South Point Park.

The bike path turns to South Loop Road, taking us to the West side.

The main entrance to the park is located here on the West side.
And there is another public restroom.

The path turns here to the North on West Loop Road.
Here is a view of Manhattan and the Queensboro Bridge.

Cherry trees are getting ready to bloom.
Cornell Tech with Queensboro Bridge in the background looks very techy.

The view of Manhattan is great.
The dedicated bike lane only goes around this campus.

Bicyclists share a road with all other traffic on the rest of the island.

Here we get on West Main Street that goes under the bridge.

The tram station is on my right.

Here you can view the tram in the blue sky and...Manhattan.

The one way West Road takes us North.

It's a very short ride to the train station on my right.
F train makes a stop here.

At the corner ahead, the West Road curves to the right to join Main street.

Here I am going to turn left on the path that takes me along the river.

Bicyclists ride in both directions here, sharing this path with pedestrians and special vehicles.

There is another walking path on my left by the fence.
That path is not suitable for biking.

Roosevelt Island is a family friendly place with many parks and playgrounds scattered all around the island.

So yes, watch out for little kids and dogs and whatever else that may jump from behind any corner.

I just passed a public school on my right.

 Here is a playground.

And there are some interesting sculptures right in the river on the left across from the soccer field you can see here.

We are approaching a prow shaped sight viewing spot.

It's right here on my left.

Next on my right is a park with grills for barbecues ;)

The Coler Memorial Hospital is on my right.

Now I am going through the West entrance into Lighthouse Park.

There are more grills on my right for barbecues.

The lighthouse is located at the North tip of Roosevelt Island.
From here you can see three boroughs.

Manhattan, Bronx, and Queens.
 A magnificent sight!

We can go back by the same path on the West side or...let's take the East side.

There is a public restroom by the East gates.

 It's on my right.

The path takes us through a parking lot to the East road.

East Road is a two way street.
Ride on the right side of the street.

The walking path by the river on my left is not suitable for biking.

East Road breaks into two ways Main Street at the corner, right here.

There are tennis courts and a baseball field on my right.

The Main street curves to the right in front of a Firefighters Station.

It follows a cobblestone pavement.
Let's turn here to the left on the East Road.

This part of East Road has traffic in both directions as a service road.

The walking path closer to the river is not suitable for biking.

East Road goes under Roosevelt Island Bridge.
There is a biking path in both directions on this bridge.

The path on my left is not very suitable for biking.
So, once we pass basketball courts, I take the path to my right through playgrounds to Main Street.

Turn to your right.

The path goes up the hill.

Move to your left and watch out for kids.

Here we get to two way Main Street.

Turn left on Main Street to go South toward the Queensboro Bridge.

There is a shopping square and the train station on my right.

And straight ahead of us is the tram station.

We completed the 3.6 miles long loop around Roosevelt island.

It takes about 20 minutes as a leisure ride.

Have fun and happy ride :)
