Virginia Creepers Aquarium Garden

Virginia Creepers Aquarium Garden

I found an interesting looking ivy plant growing on Roosevelt Island New York.
Identified it using the iNaturalist app as Virginia Creepers.

I took about 30 centimeters long cutting to grow in my aquarium garden.

Here is a close up view on the plant.
It's a very nice looking ivy.

Let's cut it on two halves.

Remove the bottom leaves to make about 2 inch long stem that we can submerge underwater.

September 12th, 2020 I put both cuttings in one of my tiny aquarium gardens populated with snails and scuds.

Only bottom parts of the stem stays in the water.

You can see roots growing on both cuttings 10 days later on September 21st.

The root grows stronger on the cutting with larger leaves.

Both cuttings look great one month since the initial setup on October 13th.

The cutting with smaller leaves develops smaller roots.

Edge parts of some leaves are drying out.

March 2nd, 2021
It's been 6 months since I start growing these Virginia Creepers with roots in water.

Both cuttings lost some leaves and yet look good.

Both cuttings have developed strong long roots that look nice in the aquarium.

My plants get only indirect sunlight coming from the window.

One of the branches dried out by the end of the month.

Virginia Creepers grow with roots in water without any maintenance making this aquarium look even prettier.
Have fun and happy aquarium gardens :)
